I think about ambiguity a lot – about combining, and the act of holding two things in opposition at once. When I make fake pools, they are an illusion - a prop for self-conscious leisure but they are also so transparently not a pool that the conflict between the feeling experienced and the thing observed creates room to hold that opposition.
In 2004, by complete chance I saw Olafur Eliasson’s Weather Project in London. I had not really considered being an artist before I saw that. It was so overpowering to be held by the setting sun and –at the same conscious moment- be in a big warehoused shell of a building. It was almost religious, a Eucharistic moment, where the thing beheld and the thing believed are different and simultaneously true.
